Visit the Kingdom of Flowers – This Beauty of Rhododendrons Can Only Be Seen in Taiwan!

Within the Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area, there are five trails: the Hazel Mountain, Giant Trees, Waterfall, Bird Watching, and Honeymoon trails. Among them, at the ridge atop the Hazel Mountain Trail, Taiwan rhododendrons are just beginning to bud.

Taiwan RhododendronTaxonomically classified under the Ericaceae (rhododendron family), it is endemic to Taiwan. On the ridge atop the Hazel Mountain Trail, it forms a small pure forest and serves as an important spot for flower viewing. The flower buds are short and stout, covered with scales (which protect the buds and help them survive the winter), and are located at the tips of branches. Each bud contains 5–10 flower buds, which often have a pinkish tint at the tips when exposed to ample sunlight. The flowers are white and bell-shaped, often densely dotted with fine red speckles on the inner upper side. The undersides of the leaves are covered with grayish-white appressed hairs, which is a key distinguishing feature from other rhododendron species.

Not only are the Taiwan rhododendrons in bloom, but other plants of the Ericaceae family within the recreation area — such as the fine-leaved rhododendron, the queen rhododendron, and the Nanao rhododendron — are also gradually blossoming. The Guanwu National Forest Recreation Area will soon be enveloped by flowers, transforming into a kingdom blanketed in blooms.
