Want to spend all your spare change before leaving a Japanese airport but not sure how? In this era of gashapon mania, Kansai Airport now has gashapon machines too! After setting up gashapon stands in Terminal 2 back in April to great acclaim, in July this year Terminal 1 followed suit. This time, you can enjoy a spin right up until you board your flight.

▲There are a total of 145 gashapon machines at the airport.

Following the installation of 118 gashapon machines in Kansai Airport’s Terminal 2, starting July 27, 2017, Terminal 1 also joined in by placing 89 machines under the central escalator on the second floor. Approximately 15 machines each have been set up at the intermediate and terminal stations of the train connecting the South and North Wings of the international terminal after passport control, bringing the total to around 145 machines. This ensures travelers can empty their wallets on gashapon right before boarding.

Ms. Yang, who lives in Taipei, traveled to Japan, and on her way back, wanting to use up her Japanese yen but unsure what to buy, the self-proclaimed gashapon enthusiast was thrilled to spot gashapon machines at the airport stairs. She excitedly spent 400 yen on two,the “Huldu Zoo”gashapon. Due to her tight boarding schedule, she didn’t have time to explore further and laughed, “I shouldn’t have wasted time buying souvenirs at the shops earlier!”

At around 200 to 300 yen per try with an incredibly diverse selection, compared to Taiwan where each one costs between 60-80 yen, the gashapon machines offer everything from popular anime characters to classic collectibles. Even non-gashapon fans might find themselves enchanted—just be careful not to miss your flight while spinning for prizes!
