Currently during the Thai New Year period, Songkran Festival events are being held across the country. Taoyuan County Government will host the “2012 Authentic Thai Songkran Festival” this Sunday (the 22nd) at the Taoyuan County Stadium, where there will be performances of exotic musical pieces, traditional blessing and Buddha-bathing ceremonies, as well as opportunities to taste Thai cuisine, participate in sepak takraw competitions, and enjoy the Miss Songkran pageant. Fans of Thai culture will be able to experience an authentic traditional Thai New Year right here in Taiwan.

Taoyuan County’s Songkran Festival has entered its 14th year and has become an event that the local Thai community looks forward to every year. In addition to maintaining the traditional water-splashing customs of the Thai New Year, this year’s event also includes a ceremony where monks receive alms and bathe the Buddha, as well as the presence of a golden Buddha to offer blessings, adding a sense of solemnity and sacredness to the joyful festivities through traditional Thai religious rituals. Additionally, there will be Thai food tasting, sepak takraw competitions, the Miss Songkran pageant, and a performance by the kuso group “Free Style” featuring songs with exotic flair such as “Welcome” and “Pauline’s Love Story.”
With a large number of foreign migrant workers in Taiwan, traditional festivals from various countries have also been introduced, giving locals the opportunity to experience different ethnic cultures. Among these, the Thai Songkran Festival is the most familiar to the public. Also known as the Songkran Festival, it holds a significance for Thai people similar to that of Lunar New Year for Taiwanese. Those studying or working abroad often return home during Songkran to reunite with their families, making it the most joyous traditional festival in Thailand.
