A new Hakka cultural park has emerged in Miaoli again. On May 12, this new “Miaoli Hakka Cultural Park” will officially open at the Miaoli Tongluo Science Park. In addition to permanent exhibitions showcasing Hakka history and culture, it will also regularly host special exhibitions on various themes, serving as a global hub for Hakka cultural research and industrial exchange.

Covering an area of 11.2 hectares, the “Miaoli Hakka Cultural Park” is designed according to the terrain, blending its unique glass curtain wall exterior with the landforms. Huang Yu-chen, Chairman of the Council for Hakka Affairs, especially recommends the “Half Moon Pond” behind the main building—a distinctive feature of traditional Hakka architecture—where visitors can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Hakka settlements at the foot of the mountain.
Designed in harmony with the undulating terrain of the hilly site, the “Miaoli Hakka Cultural Park” includes outdoor spaces, the main exhibition hall area, and auxiliary facilities. It uses artificial hills composed of water and greenery patterns to envelop the main building, creating the imagery of terraced fields. Visitors can reach the second-floor permanent exhibition area through the overhead bridge from the park entrance, where exhibits tell the moving stories of Taiwanese Hakka immigrants. The first floor features a multimedia interactive exhibition area. Additionally, the special exhibition zones are planned around different elements that showcase the charm of Hakka culture, including Taiwan Hall, Global Hall, Children’s Hall, Cultural and Creative Industries Hall, and the Camphor Industry space—reflecting the profound meanings of heritage and innovation within Hakka culture.
Incorporating green building concepts, it adopts an innovative three-dimensional design with irregular volumes and a double-layer curtain wall system. Leveraging heat currents generated by temperature differences, the design naturally channels air between the two layers of the glass curtain wall to block outdoor temperatures and heat radiation, achieving a cooling effect. Furthermore, the outdoor stepped plaza and main stage area will host diverse artistic and cultural performances such as Hakka music and community group shows, bringing audiences closer to Hakka culture. On the opening day, in addition to captivating performances by the Hui Feng Dance Troupe, Miaoli Choir, and Golden Melody Award-winning singer Tang Yun-huan (aka Dongdong), the event will also gather a thousand visitors to take part in making Hakka rice cakes.
