Do you remember the household census from your childhood, when officials would come to your home to stamp and verify information? But has anyone ever experienced conducting a census for insects or birds? As May 22, the "International Day for Biological Diversity," approaches, the Subtropical Ecology Society and Yangmingshan National Park Headquarters are jointly hosting the "2012 International Day for Biological Diversity Carnival." The event includes a biodiversity experience activity on May 19, a species census on May 19–20, and a biodiversity symposium on May 22. These will introduce the public to the species in nature and even guide them in observing amphibians and reptiles at night. Free registration is now open.

In this year’s series of International Day for Biological Diversity events, activities include a biodiversity experience, a biodiversity census (BioBlitz), and a biodiversity symposium. The content covers an introduction to biodiversity, getting to know fruits and vegetables, stories of Yangmingshan, plant and insect observation, bird watching, and more. The symposium will also feature personal sharing from American environmental artist Jane Ingram Allen and American 100-mile food miles practitioner Marissa Markowitz. All events will be held at Yangmingshu House in Yangmingshan National Park. Except for the biodiversity experience, which allows on-site registration, all other activities require advance booking. All events are free to attend.

The annual May 22 was designated as the "International Day for Biological Diversity" to commemorate the establishment of the International Convention on Biological Diversity. On this day each year, countries around the world hold related events to remind people of the importance of biodiversity and to promote the three main goals outlined in the convention: "protection, sustainable use, and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources."
