A passionate and energetic Tahitian dance competition will take place tomorrow (the 13th) from 18:00 to 22:30 at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) in Hawaii. This festival is expected to attract many visitors, as well as adults and children from various Hawaiian islands, who will compete in different dance categories. This year, an invitational competition has been added, featuring performances by the most skilled and graceful dancers, some of whom have even won titles such as “Best Tahitian Solo Dance” at the Tahitian Cultural Festival.

The highlight of the solo dance competition will be the skill of rapid hip shaking (Otea). Otea is the most famous style of Tahitian dance, characterized by fast, intense movements and the swishing sound of the dancers’ skirts. Male dancers are judged primarily on their Pa’oti (Tahitian dance) performance, showcasing their masculine vigor through sharp, scissor-like leg movements. Judges evaluate contestants not only on their dancing skills, grace, speed, and dance style, but also on their costumes, the harmony of the drumbeats, and the overall performance.
Alfred Grace, Chief Operating Officer of PCC, said, “Sometimes we even see children as young as 3 years old showcasing their dancing skills. Even if they can only participate as performers, their strong enthusiasm for Tahitian culture is something we truly appreciate. Every year when we plan the Tahitian event schedule, we align it with festivals held in the Papeete area or the Tahitian Cultural Festival. We are very proud to have maintained this 13-year tradition and to be committed to promoting Tahitian culture.” Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for children aged 5 to 11, and free for visitors with a Kamaaina Annual Pass or a one-day pass.
