Taipei has a long history of coffee culture, which has developed over the past hundred years. From the opening of the first café, “Pole Road,” during the Japanese colonial period, to the American military-era cafés such as “Old Tree Café,” “South American Café,” and “Bee Da Café,” it has now evolved into specialty coffee, sourcing coffee beans from around the world, making it like a global café. From September 1 to 2, the “Taipei Coffee Story House” at Yuanshan Flower Exhibition Hall will introduce Taipei’s coffee culture, and nearly a hundred varieties of global coffee beans will be available for purchase on-site. Exhibitors include businesses such as Anjing Estate from Central America, BEANCAFE known for high-quality coffee beans grown under tropical rainforests, and OLD CAFE offering Nepalese coffee beans with a sweet citrus flavor. There will also be free on-site lectures by coffee experts.

And those who are particularly fond of black coffee are in luck. From now until August 29, the Taipei Coffee Story House is calling on 100 members of the public to sign up as on-site judges to sample the signature black coffees from 20 well-known Taipei coffee shops and cast their sacred votes to select Taipei’s most popular black coffee establishments. Those who miss the registration can still attend the “Coffee Expert Lecture” on-site, where experts will compare French press and hand drip brewing methods, teaching everyone how to brew a great cup of coffee and how to taste one.
