The annual Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival has entered its 30th edition and will kick off at 08:00 on September 16 this year. A total of 1,336 teams and 28,390 participants are expected, including international swimmers from 33 countries across five continents. In addition, from September 14 to 16, hotels around the lake area will host the President Fish Festival. On September 15, there will also be the Nantou International Super Triathlon—Sun Moon Lake Cross Swim, as well as the Night of the Swimming Carnival in the evening, featuring a performance by winner of the Golden Melody Award for Best Taiwanese Female Singer, Showlen Maya.

This year’s Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival kicks off with the “Nantou Super Triathlon Series,” jointly organized by Nantou County, combining the swim event, Wuling Cycling, and Zhongtan Marathon. The first event, the Sun Moon Lake Cross Swim, will be held at 09:00 on September 15. In the evening at 19:00, the Swimming Night at Yida Shao Pier Square will conclude with an aquatic fireworks show.
The Sun Moon Lake International Swimming Carnival on September 16 will start at 08:00, with participants setting off from Zhaowu Pier and finishing at Yida Shao Pier, covering a waterway of approximately 3,000 meters. The New Gang Fengtian Temple’s Kaizhang Mazu will also take part in this year’s swim, carried by 66 devotees to complete the feat. The event has been certified by the International Olympic Committee and is recognized globally as a benchmark in long-distance swimming due to its scale, difficulty, and sustainability, making it the largest swimming event in the world.
Additionally, the President Fish Festival hosted by hotels around the Sun Moon Lake area from September 14 will not only offer a feast of President Fish cuisine over three days, but also feature a President Fish fry release event at 07:30 on September 16 at Shuishe Pier, with an expected release of 10,000 fry.
