Winter in Hokkaido is the season of “powder snow.” With its excellent snow quality, Hokkaido attracts a large number of tourists for skiing and hot spring bathing. Besides skiing, there are many other unique winter activities in Hokkaido. In Shiretoko, there is Japan’s only ice-walking on drifting ice. From February to late March, when the ice drifts ashore, visitors can put on survival suits and walk on the ice. Alternatively, from mid-January to late March, they can go on a snowshoe trek to the “Maiden’s Tear” waterfall.

The water transparency of Lake Mashu was measured at 41.6 meters in Showa 5 (1930), ranking it as the lake with the highest transparency in the world. The lake has a circumference of 21 kilometers and a maximum depth of 212 meters. Surrounded by cliffs, Lake Mashu is an untouched “mysterious lake.” It is often shrouded in thick fog blowing in from the Kushiro Wetland, further enhancing its mysterious aura. In winter, the lake is particularly captivating due to its clear air and light-pollution-free starry skies. The period from November 1 to May 19 is ideal for stargazing.

Located near Lake Kussharo, Kawaguchiko Onsen is often enveloped in steam rising from the hot springs that surface from the riverbed, creating a dreamy atmosphere. The onsen town is nestled in a forest and offers a uniquely tranquil experience. From mid-January to the end of March, the area hosts the “Kawaguchiko Onsen Diamond Dust Party,” which is free and open to all visitors. Additionally, Hokkaido in winter also offers the chance to go canoeing. From January 9 to the end of March, natural canoe tours are available along the headwaters of the Kushiro River — making for truly unique winter experiences in Hokkaido.
