The breathtaking landscapes and local cuisines along the journey are certainly captivating, but the deeply moving human stories rooted in the land leave an even more profound impression. For instance, in Donghe Township, Taitung County, there’s a “prodigal son” from Chiba Prefecture, Japan, who became a Bunun son-in-law through surfing, a dropout who transformed into the principal of a hunter school in Shuilian Village, Hualien County, and someone who gave up a six-figure monthly salary to buy a discarded elephant slide for NT$100 and, together with Green Island’s elephant helpers, fulfilled children’s dreams. To celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2013, the Eastern Coastal National Scenic Area Administration under the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications launched an essay competition from now until January 15, 2013. By uploading a small touching story encountered along the East Coast to the official event website, participants have the chance to win prizes such as in-depth eco-tour packages and homestay experience vouchers. Winning entries will also be featured in the 25th-anniversary commemorative publication by the East Coast Administration.

This “The Sea Is Better With You” essay competition accepts online submissions, written in Chinese, with no restrictions on length or style—short poems, essays, or other forms are all welcome. As long as it’s a touching good story accompanied by one to three photos or hand-drawn illustrations, participants can complete their submission by uploading to the “The Sea Is Better With You – Small Stories, Big Touches Along the East Coast” event webpage. This event will be judged by the organizing committee and through online voting, selecting first, second, and third prizes, as well as honorable mentions and merit awards. Online voting runs from February 1, 2013, to February 28, 2013. Whether you participate by submitting or voting, you’ll have a chance to win homestay experience vouchers, theme park tickets, and handmade goods from the East Coast.
