Who says playing traditional Chinese music has to be all formal and stiff? The “2013 Carrefour Culture and Arts Season,” jointly organized by the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Carrefour Cultural and Educational Foundation, will debut tomorrow (the 19th) at 19:30 at the Taichung Round Stage Outdoor Theater. The performance will feature “Cai Feng Yue Fang” presenting “Eastern Legends · Rock 'n' Roll with Traditional Chinese Music.” This team of 13 young musicians, with an average age of 23, will blend edgy makeup and punk hairstyles with rock-infused traditional Chinese music. With a dazzling stage and lighting effects, the audience will be invited to rock along to the rhythm. Free entry will be available starting at 17:30 tomorrow afternoon.

This performance will include not only works inspired by Taiwanese folk songs, indigenous music, and classical pieces for various instruments, but also multiple original compositions by Huang Zhengming, artistic director of Cai Feng Yue Fang, and popular music creator Zhan Xunwei. The music showcases a bold, rebellious yet passionate and pure creative style, successfully integrating “rock music” with “traditional Chinese music.” Instruments like the erhu, pipa, and suona — known for their distinctive sounds — are combined with elements such as Western DJ mixing, electronic music, and rock.
The program is refreshingly novel, and the performance style will completely overturn the public’s impression of traditional Chinese music concerts. The musicians will perform entirely from memory and have undergone dance and movement training with a celebrity choreographer. While executing technically challenging pieces, they will also take on today’s most popular street dance moves. Dressed in leather jackets and riding boots, with eye-catching makeup and punk hairstyles, set against a luxurious stage and dynamic lighting, the performance transforms into a modern, fashionable musical show with even greater energy.
