Where to go during the holidays? The Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau has planned a Traditional Arts Walk & Spring Stroll from February 12 to February 15 — from the third to the sixth day of the Lunar New Year — connecting the four major hubs of Taichung City and the Shanhai-Tun area. The program includes 32 performances featuring traditional art showdowns between international groups from Japan, Bolivia, Africa, Mexico, and local teams, 16 art workshops, art markets, and street performances. There’s something happening every day, all filled with excitement, and you can even get a lucky red envelope!

This year’s “2013 Taichung Traditional Arts Festival” breaks from previous years by moving the event from the Lantern Festival to the Lunar New Year period, running from February 12 (the third day) to February 15 (the sixth day). Festivities will take place simultaneously at the Dacheng Cultural Center, Huludun Cultural Center, Gangkou Art Center, Tuncultural Art Center, and the Folklore Museum. This year’s festival is thoughtfully designed with “multiple highlights, one focus per day.” On February 12 (the third day of the Lunar New Year), the Mighty Dragon Lion Martial Arts War Drum Troupe’s colorful lion dances and celebratory dance dramas will kick off the event at the Gangkou Art Center, setting a joyful tone for the new year. On February 13 (the fourth day), led by Chen Shengzai, the “king of clowns” in the Taiwanese opera world, Minghua Garden’s Day Troupe will perform at the Tuncultural Art Center, showcasing a rich variety of traditional arts that complement the festive atmosphere.
On February 14 (the fifth day), as Eastern festivity meets Western Valentine’s Day, the One Band Play Band will deliver a romantic performance at the Dacheng Cultural Center. On February 15 (the sixth day), the festival’s grand finale will feature performances by the renowned rock folk orchestra “Cai Feng Yue Fang” and the “Taichung Sheng Wuzhou Puppet Troupe” at the Huludun Cultural Center, bringing the Traditional Arts Festival to a spectacular close. Throughout the event, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has arranged a daily performance at the Folklore Museum in the afternoon, allowing visitors to enjoy wonderful shows while exploring the venue.
