The race to reach new heights has become a fierce competition among many cities, and London’s The Shard is no exception. Yet this cone-shaped structure resembling a transparent pyramid has captivated the world. From the top-floor observation deck, gaze out over the River Thames and London’s cityscape—it feels as if you could almost touch the soft clouds in the sky. Imagining what it’s like to soar through the air must feel something like this.

Since its completion last year, The Shard has quickly become the brightest new star in London’s skyline. Located in the bustling heart of central London, it faces the London Bridge from afar. Many of London’s famous attractions are within walking distance, including Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, and the artsy Southbank Centre and Waterloo areas. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, The Shard features over 11,000 glass panels, drawing inspiration from the spires of London churches while also evoking the imagery of shattered glass—hence its name. Standing 310 meters tall and comprising 72 floors, it houses office spaces on the lower levels and, higher up, Michelin-starred restaurants, the five-star Shangri-La Hotel, luxury residences, and London’s highest observation gallery offering 360-degree panoramic views, earning it the nickname “vertical city.” The glass panels at the very top tilt upwards rather than converging, allowing the building to “breathe” in the sky. The transparent façade reflects the beautiful daylight and allows sunlight to flood in effortlessly. Since its official public opening on February 1st this year, it has triggered a surge in visitors, and this skyscraper craze is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
