In the small town of Sasbachwalden in Germany’s southern Black Forest region, the Schlafen im Weinfass wine barrel accommodation is built on a hill overlooking vineyards and wineries. The farmhouse was built in 1665, and grape cultivation and winemaking began in the early 20th century. After four generations of management, not only the wine but also the brandy and liqueurs here have accompanied the residents of the Black Forest for over a century. But massive wine barrels eventually wear out over time, so the resourceful winemaker family hauled large barrels up the hill and marketed them as “sleeping in a wine barrel in the vineyard.” Flat-lying accommodation barrels and lounge barrels sit atop the hill, each just big enough to fit two single beds. Yet lying asleep inside a barrel with a view of the vineyard and the Black Forest through the window offers a novel experience that satisfies any wine lover who’s not just here for the drink—or a simple winery tour.
