The Greater Pier-2 Project has expanded the grounds of the Pier-2 Art Center. This summer, a new installation art exhibition titled “Gas Laboratory,” curated by emerging artists and themed around gases and their applications, is on display from today until October 20th at Warehouse C5. Participating artists include Wang Deyu, Wang Xinli, Bai Shuangquan, Xu Yuzhi, Studio Ship, Xie Jiawen, Rachael Morrison, among others. Their works—ranging from airbags, steam boxes, air collection, bubble wrap, scent-based installations, to balloon art—offer poetic, immersive experiences that engage the senses in unique ways.

Air sustains life on Earth and carries scents; human civilization, however, has given air functions beyond its most primal roles. Water vapor, formed through evaporation, can cook food or even be converted into energy. Inflated balloons delight children and bring joy. Air-filled specialized fabric pouches serve as safety devices or offer comfort. Bubble wrap, made up of countless tiny air pockets, protects delicate and precious items. Invisible and colorless, air may seem intangible, yet it is intricately linked to our lives.
The Kaohsiung City Cultural Affairs Bureau notes that while air is everywhere and easily overlooked, it is incredibly vital. At a time when contemporary new media art is flourishing, a group of artists have chosen this most intimate of substances—air—as their medium. Through forms such as airbags, bubble wrap, balloons, scents, and steam boxes, they invite audiences to see, feel, touch, and enjoy these “gas”-based creations. Featuring seven artists, the exhibition showcases diverse works inspired by the unique properties of various gases, immersing visitors in a world of gas research where they can uncover the life stories told by each artist.
Visitors can draw inspiration from everyday life and upload a “scented” photo to Facebook. The organizers will select the top 10 best scent photos and award small prizes. Additionally, artist Xie Jiawen will host three live balloon creation sessions during the exhibition, open for public viewing. Admission to the exhibition is completely free.
