Want to go on vacation in the Grand Canyon, USA? You might need to bring a shovel. The American Conservation Experience (ACE) is an organization that recruits volunteers to carry out environmental conservation activities in national parks and other wilderness areas across the United States. Since most of their service locations are national parks, volunteers often require extensive training or specialized knowledge beforehand, making the entry threshold quite high.

However, to help more people understand the importance of environmental conservation, the American Conservation Association has launched ACE Volunteer Vacations. With a minimum 11-day experience camp, you only need to pay $600 to join professional volunteers in exploring various national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Catalina Island. Together with fellow conservation volunteers, you’ll hike through mountains and rivers, stay in volunteer campsites, and enjoy a hard-earned lunch in the forest. It may sound wonderful, but if your job includes digging trails with a shovel or removing invasive species that threaten ecological balance—working eight hours a day under the scorching sun—would you still want to take on this hardcore program? Or would the sweat make you appreciate even more the magnificent landscapes formed over millions of years?
