Outshining the Yellow Rubber Duck！ A 70-meter Blue Sperm Whale Swims into Youth Park

While all of Taiwan is going crazy over the Yellow Rubber Duck, Taiwan’s locally created “Blue Sperm Whale” will also make an appearance at Taipei’s Youth Park from October 5 to 20. With a size that surpasses the Yellow Rubber Duck—nearly 70 meters long and about the size of five basketball courts—it is not only the largest in Taiwan but also a world record holder. Its adorable appearance and astonishing size will rival the Yellow Rubber Duck, making it one of the hottest travel topics in Taiwan recently.

The “Paper Windmill Taiwan Animals and Insects Creative Exhibition” has drawn crowds since its debut in Taichung in April this year and moved to Miaoli in May, attracting 250,000 visitors. The most anticipated part is the “Sperm Whale Theme Pavilion.” Following that, this massive whale, which cost tens of millions to create and took nearly a year to conceptualize, will “swim” into Taipei Youth Park on October 5.

 

The dream sperm whale by Paper Windmill is about 70 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 12 meters high. Its appearance features the distinctive square head of a blue sperm whale combined with childlike brushstrokes. In comparison, it covers an area as large as five basketball courts, stands four stories tall, and is three times the size of a typical sperm whale. Moreover, this is a whale without any fish bones—the entire structure is inflated using blowers, with no internal support beams or pillars. Inside the whale is a real-experience underwater exploration space that can accommodate 300 visitors at a time, making it the world’s largest sperm whale-shaped theme pavilion.

The design of the “Paper Windmill Sperm Whale Theme Pavilion” takes you from the whale’s mouth into the underwater world, moving from the shallow sea into the deep-sea trench. First, you’ll see seven large coral reefs on both sides, in shades of blue and red, with swaying seagrass scattered among them—all made from environmentally recycled plastic bags—and various types of deep-sea creatures. Looking up, you’ll also spot two vividly lifelike giant jellyfish floating in mid-air. In front, the fish bones left behind after the whale’s meal are cleverly transformed into an underwater tunnel.

Walking to the center of the whale’s belly, you’ll see a sunken ship with all sorts of bizarre items on it—printers, double sofas, teddy bears, and more. It turns out that Paper Windmill, aiming to raise awareness about human destruction of marine ecosystems, has integrated environmental issues. By showcasing the trash inside the whale’s belly, they promote environmental conservation. Additionally, at the tail of the whale, you’ll enter the deep-sea trench, where seven undersea volcanoes spew thick smoke, adding even more fantasy to the underwater world.
