To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of Taichung Prefectural Hall, Taichung is hosting its first “Architecture. Light. Taichung – 3D Light Sculpture Art Exhibition,” which will officially debut on November 1. For three consecutive weekends from November, at 6:30 PM each evening, a spectacular 3D light sculpture show will be presented alternately at Taichung Prefectural Hall and the Yanwu Field. Unlike conventional 3D movies that confine special effects to the screen, 3D light sculpture projects these effects directly into real-world settings. Using precise tracking algorithms and cutting-edge point-to-point seamless projection technology, vivid 3D animations are cast onto massive architectural structures, instantly transforming their appearances and bringing them to life under the night sky. It’s an awe-inspiring sensory experience where the boundaries between reality and illusion blur—akin to Howl’s Moving Castle—taking audiences on a magical open-air journey beneath the stars alongside Taichung’s historic and cultural landmarks.

The event will unfold throughout November. On November 1 and 2, the opening ceremony “Welcome Light Concert” will be held at Taichung Prefectural Hall. The opening act, “Architecture Light Fantasy Show,” will feature live interaction between performers and light projections, with a magician conjuring magical light spells to construct the Prefectural Hall from nothing in mere moments. The dynamic spatial transformations allow audiences to experience the charm of light and shadow interaction firsthand. This will be followed by the specially created “Glorious Century 3D Light Sculpture Show” in honor of the hall’s centennial, performed by the “MITSO Taiwan Musicians Symphony Orchestra.” Dozens of exquisitely crafted, vibrant scenes and hundreds of visual transitions will narrate the century-long story. Under the night lights, Taichung Prefectural Hall will morph into a golden rice field, reappear as the original architectural blueprint by Japanese designers, transform into a nostalgic old shop, or become a futuristic high-tech structure. Ingenious temporal shifts and futuristic visions are dramatically presented through the fusion of sound, light, music, and visuals, showcasing and commemorating the hundred-year legacy of Taichung Prefectural Hall.

On November 8 and 9, the interlude “Light War History” moves to the Yanwu Field in Taichung. The shadow warrior “Photon” will revive the martial spirit of the field, traversing time and space. The latest virtual interaction technology allows real performers and light projections to intertwine. Combined with live performances of guqin and kendo at Daohe Six Arts Cultural Hall, dancers’ movements synchronize with the play of light and shadow. With every gesture, shimmering reflections ripple outward, crafting a fantastical dreamscape where sound and light harmonize and reality blends with illusion. On November 15 and 16, the closing event “Time Phonograph” returns to Taichung Prefectural Hall. The “NTSO Taiwan Symphony Orchestra” will lead audiences on a nostalgic trip through the classic “Glorious Century 3D Light Sculpture Show” and “Architecture Light Fantasy Show,” accompanied by timeless melodies. This offers another chance for those who missed the earlier shows to witness the splendid revival of this centennial legacy, bringing a perfect close to the Prefectural Hall’s 100th birthday celebration.

Taiwan’s first-ever light sculpture art exhibition is held in a bustling urban area with outdoor performances. There will be brief street closures during the evening events at Prefectural Hall. Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation. In addition to the light sculpture and fantasy shows, all three events feature “Architectural Light Interaction Painting,” allowing audiences not only to enjoy cutting-edge light art but also to engage in the fun of creating graffiti on historic buildings using colorful light with the whole family. The opening event will also offer a commemorative stamp for the “Architecture. Light. Taichung” centennial celebration and a special first-day cover from the post office.
