In Japan, cherry blossoms typically begin blooming in March in southern regions such as Kagoshima and Izu, gradually moving northward until they reach Hokkaido by the end of May. This phenomenon is known as Japan’s “cherry blossom front.” Now, Taipei’s “cherry blossom front” is quietly unfolding at the bike station in the Shilin Xishan area.

The newly completed bike station by the Taipei City Government Public Works Department, Bureau of Urban Development, has seen about 50% of its cherry blossoms in full bloom due to its mountainous terrain, windward exposure, and climatic conditions, making it one of the earliest areas in Taipei where cherry blossoms appear. With the Lunar New Year holiday approaching, cycling to enjoy the blossoms could be an alternative and unique way to celebrate the Year of the Horse.
Huang Liyuan, head of the Bureau of Urban Development, stated that this bike station is Taipei’s first rest stop specifically designed for mountain bikers. Located on Section 3, Zhishan Road, Lane 71, leading toward Pingdingshi in the steepest section of the road, the design took into account the nearby cherry blossom grove, providing an ideal spot for cyclists to admire the blooms. Currently, the pink-hued cherry blossoms sway in the breeze along Pingjing Street, turning cycling into a visual delight.
One recommended route is to cycle from Mingde Amusement Park along Section 3, Zhishan Road, Lane 71, all the way to Lengshuikeng. Along the way, you’ll pass the “bike station.” Although the route is long, the scenery is diverse—you can enjoy cherry blossoms, maple leaves, and stream views depending on the season. Additionally, you can take in the unique sight of a satellite radar station in Lane 131, Jingshan Road, and take a break at a nearby café.

Chen Jianfan, head of the Slope Land Management Section at the Bureau of Urban Development, said that the Xishan community where the bike station is located is surrounded by numerous attractions. These include the city’s largest “NeiShuangXi Nature Center” forest park, Pingding Ancient Canal, Pingxi and Fengguizui hiking trails, and other well-known sites. On regular days, many cyclists already enjoy riding through the mountains and forests. The bike station offers a wide view, with refreshing mountain breezes, and overlooks the Shilin and Neihu areas, presenting a breathtaking mountain panorama that lifts the spirits. During the Lunar New Year holiday, netizens might consider cycling up Yangmingshan to view the cherry blossoms, stopping midway at the bike station to rest and enjoy the scenery. It’s not only a great way to stay fit but also offers a fresh experience for cherry blossom viewing.
