Dàtóu’s coffee philosophy is simple yet profound. He is only responsible for the quality of the beans and the accuracy of the brewing process. As for the flavor, he leaves that as a question for customers to experience, hoping they’ll break away from their previous notions and savor the moment. “This Yirgacheffe last week had a lemongrass taste.” He leaned in to sniff and caught a hint of sweetness. “The flavor of coffee beans changes.”

Every hand-poured coffee tastes different. Each sip is a private moment between you and the coffee — an exchange of feelings that cannot be replicated, not even from one cup to the next. That’s what makes coffee so intriguing. That’s why Dàtóu hopes everyone will let go of past biases and simply enjoy the aroma in their cup.

Dàtóu doesn’t just sell coffee; he generously offers the first-floor space of his café for art performances. Over the course of nearly half a year, there have been around four or five art exhibitions, including static paintings, installations, and live music performances. Is there a fee? “No, we let them use it for free.”
Listening wide-eyed to Dàtóu’s story, in this chaotic society where the surface seems full of despair, encountering a young person like Dàtóu can only make you feel... ashamed.
