When it comes to coffee, Italy or the United States might be the first things that come to mind, but this addictive black beverage originally spread widely in the Arab world. Had it not been for the bag of beans left behind by the Ottomans during their siege of Vienna in the 16th century—beans that introduced Europeans to an entirely new flavor—this “Islamic wine” might have remained the richest secret of the Middle East forever.

The most unique aspect of Turkish coffee lies in its preparation: a small amount of water, equivalent to one demitasse cup, is poured into a traditional Turkish coffee pot called a “Cezve.” Then, about one heaping tablespoon of coffee powder is added, along with the desired amount of sugar. The mixture is stirred while being heated over low flame until it nears boiling and begins to foam. At this point, half of the coffee is poured into the cup, and the remaining coffee in the pot is further heated. Once it boils again, it is poured into the cup, resulting in a ready-to-enjoy drink.

Because Turkish coffee is unfiltered, its texture is richer, and it is traditionally served with a glass of water, as well as the region’s famous Turkish delight and other sweets.

With the passage of time and shifting trends—especially following the advent of instant coffee and machine-brewed coffee—Turkish coffee has faced the challenge of gradually fading away. Yet, this brewing method, which is deeply intertwined with the origins of coffee and even Turkish history itself, is both a culture and an art. To revive international appreciation for this beautiful heritage, Selamique was born.

The word “Selamique” originates from the Ottoman Empire era, referring to a space in the house where guests were welcomed for coffee or tea. At its flagship store in Levent, the staff will serve you a set of Turkish coffee and desserts. On a beautiful silver tray, richly aromatic Turkish coffee is presented alongside gold-leaf-topped Turkish delight. It’s so exquisitely presented that you’re almost reluctant to touch it. The delicate texture and aroma of the natural, encasing sugar coating on the delight soften the bitterness of the coffee.
