Now is the best time to visit Japan for cherry blossom viewing. Ranked among Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots” and recognized as Hokkaido’s premier destination for cherry blossoms, “Matsumae Park” will hold the “Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival.” During this period, over 10,000 cherry trees of 250 varieties will bloom in a dazzling array of colors. Located within Matsumae Park, Matsumae Castle is Japan’s northernmost, Hokkaido’s only, and also the latest-built traditional castle in all of Japan. Officially named “Fukuyama Castle,” it is known as the “Hometown of Cherry Blossoms” and is one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing spots among Japanese people, as well as being listed among the Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. The cherry blossoms of Matsumae Castle were planted by wealthy merchants in the castle town and by the feudal lord stationed here from Kyoto. Even today, some 250-year-old weeping cherry trees still bloom. To preserve the life of these ancient cherry trees, the residents of Matsumae are passionate about propagating new varieties from them, with 70 successful varieties so far. Today, there are 250 varieties of cherry blossoms in Matsumae, numbering over 10,000 trees, mostly double-flowered cherry varieties. Among the various types of cherry blossoms in Matsumae, the most unique is the “Bloodline Cherry” located in Kōzenji Temple at the foot of Matsumae Castle. Legend has it that the spirit of the cherry tree resides within.
