Hong Kong’s one-Michelin-star Cantonese dim sum restaurant Tim Ho Wan collaborated with Taipei’s Grand Hyatt on dim sum and afternoon tea last July. In recent years, it has become a must-try local and affordable Hong Kong delicacy for Taiwanese travelers. The original Mong Kok flagship store has since relocated, with many foreign visitors now heading to the Central branch instead. Other branches such as those in North Point, Citygate Outlets, and Sham Shui Po also see considerable crowds from both locals and tourists.
Tim Ho Wan founder and head chef Mak Kwai-pui, whose Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong is renowned, visited Taiwan last year to test the waters and has since planned an expansion into the Taiwanese market. The Taipei branch is expected to be the second overseas location after Singapore, with the site currently set at the intersection of Park Road and Zhongxiao West Road. The opening is slated for late July or early August. Tim Ho Wan’s dim sum is known for its affordability, with prices ranging between NT$50 and NT$90. Whether it can maintain pricing close to that in Hong Kong will be a key point of interest. Fans of Tim Ho Wan won’t need to fly to Hong Kong to enjoy it—whether long queues will form during the initial opening phase remains to be seen.
