Tokyo Skytree Celebrates Its 2nd Anniversary, Thanking 84.03 Million Visitors

The world’s tallest telecommunications tower, “Tokyo Skytree” (東京スカイツリー), celebrated its second anniversary on May 22 since opening in 2012. As of March 31 of this year, the total number of visitors to the entire Tokyo Skytree complex, including retail outlets and the aquarium, has reached 84.03 million. Of these, 11.72 million visited the observation decks. The observation decks surpassed 10 million visitors on their 564th day since opening in December 2013, playing a significant role in revitalizing tourism in the historic Asakusa and Sumida districts, attracting more domestic and international travelers to visit and spend in the area.

To celebrate its 2nd anniversary, Tokyo Skytree held a series of events from May 22 to June 1 under the theme “Enjoy！Tokyo Skytreetown® Thank You！2nd Anniversary.” In addition to special lighting displays daily, many related activities were held throughout the Asakusa and Sumida areas, allowing visitors to share in the joy of Tokyo Skytree’s second anniversary.

Events included giving away pink rose saplings—symbolizing “gratitude”—to visitors on Tokyo Skytree’s birthday, May 22 (distributed starting at 13:00, limited to 1,000 saplings). On the same day, visitors also had the chance to take photos with the tower’s station master and Tokyo Skytree mascots. The entire Tokyo Skytree was also decorated specially for the 2nd anniversary, with unique arrangements on the 1st floor, 4th floor, main observation deck, and Tembo Gallery.

On the evening of the 22nd, a press conference for a micro-movie featuring Tokyo Skytree as the main backdrop was held. On the 24th and 25th, kabuki performances produced by Tokyo Skytree, starring Nakamura Shichinosuke and Onoe Matsuyuki, were staged. Additionally, Tokyo Skytree’s mascot “Sorakara-chan” donned a pink outfit symbolizing “elegance,” different from her usual blue attire, and appeared for meet-and-greets with the public at 12:30, 14:00, and 15:30 on the 1st floor on May 14, 15, 17, 18, 21, 22, 24, 25, 28, 29, 31, and June 1.
