The 2014 International Luxury Travel Market Asia is a major gathering for the luxury travel industry in the Asia-Pacific region, held this year from June 2 to June 5 in Shanghai. The opening ceremony, the first event to kick off the expo, was packed to capacity, featuring distinguished guests including renowned scholar and author Martin Jacques, celebrated writer and journalist Nury Vittachi, and Weibo Vice President Ge Jingdong. In his speech, Nury Vittachi expressed his hope that luxury travel brands would "find their unique stories, incorporating diverse characters, emotions, details, narratives, and energy." Meanwhile, Ge Jingdong addressed luxury travel buyers and exhibitors, stating, "Today, social media has become a crucial reference for Chinese travelers when planning their trips."

The most popular segment of the opening ceremony was the "Dialogue with Editors" session. Hosted by CBS News' Peter Greenberg, the panel included Divia Thani from India and Xiao Yan from China of Condé Nast Traveler, Sarah Spagnolo from the U.S. and Chris Kucway from Southeast Asia of Travel + Leisure, as well as Hilary Doling from Australia’s Luxury Travel Bible. Each shared their sources of inspiration. Hilary Doling is inspired by "real stories rather than dry statistics"; Divia Thani expressed her preference for "stories that take risks and provoke thought"; Sarah Spagnolo seeks "distinctive and vividly told stories"; Xiao Yan, Editor-in-Chief of Condé Nast Traveler China, hopes to see "unique stories that introduce readers to novel travel experiences, inspiring them while also offering practical guidance." Chris Kucway believes "stories should consider the reading preferences of the magazine’s specific audience."
