Starting around April each year, during the transition from spring to summer, the sea around Matsu becomes particularly romantic. Much like a scene from the movie “Life of Pi,” when you gaze out at the ocean, you might chance upon the magical sight of the entire surface glowing a brilliant blue. Locals have even given this enchanting phenomenon the beautiful name “Blue Tears.”

The wonder of Blue Tears,occurs annually starting in April and lasts anywhere from June to August.It is caused by bioluminescent plankton called dinoflagellates that emit tiny specks of blue light when agitated by waves or when crashing against the shore. It’s said that in Matsu, this phenomenon was historically referred to as “Dingxiang Shui” (Clove Water), as large gatherings of these organisms would attract swarms of clove fish to feed. It's important to note that this breathtaking spectacle is rare and depends on many factors — not only must the season be right, but the sea must also be swept by southern winds and stirred up by waves that disturb the noctiluca, creating the perfect conditions to witness this otherworldly beauty.
Among the Matsu archipelago, the southern islands of Juguang and Nangan are more likely spots to catch a glimpse of the Blue Tears.Popular viewing locations include Nangan’s “Iron Fort,” “Dahan Outpost,” and the shoreline stretching from Ren’ai Village to Jinsha Village. Additionally, walking along Dongyin’s Fu Zheng Beach, Meng’ao Harbor, or Beigan’s Qiaozi, Qinbi Beach, Tanghou Dao Beach, and Nangan’s Jinsha Beach may cause your footsteps to sparkle with little blue lights, offering the chance to leave behind “blue footprints.”
To promote Blue Tears tourism, the Lienchiang County Tourism Bureau has specially organized a photography competition, inviting photography enthusiasts to capture the unique natural ecological phenomenon of Matsu’s “Blue Tears” (noctiluca) through their lenses. The goal is to share and spread the beauty of Matsu with the world, and everyone is invited to participate in the “2nd Matsu Blue Tears Photography Contest 2014.”
