Beat the summer heat with a visit to the Mystical Valley in Taroko

There are many well-known scenic spots along the Taroko area, and the Shakadang Trail, also known as the Mystical Valley Trail, is an absolute must-see. The trail follows the Shakadang River and stretches 4.4 kilometers one way, taking about two hours to hike. Shakadang originates from when the Truku people (formerly part of the Atayal tribe) unearthed molars while establishing a settlement here. The local indigenous people regarded these as historical traces left by their ancestors, thus naming the place Shakadang, which means "molar" in the Truku language. It was once named "Mystical Valley," but in 2001, the site was officially renamed to Shakadang, as called in the Truku language. Both the river and the trail derive their names from this.

 

Originally, the Shakadang Trail was built to develop hydroelectric power along the Liwu River. It has now been transformed into a scenic trail, with added rest platforms and informational signs. Thanks to its gentle slope and breathtaking surroundings, it has long been one of the most popular hiking routes in the Taroko region.

Walking through the woods along the trail, accompanied by the cool, clear stream, you’ll see the riverbed scattered with rocks of all sizes, mostly marble and gneiss. The rushing turquoise waters glide over the stones, smoothing them over time. When you’re tired, take a refreshing dip in the stream, admire Taroko’s natural beauty, and beat the summer heat.
