On the island of Hawaii, water scenery isn’t only found by the sea. A previously published article in a well-known international travel magazine introduced an exploration of waterfalls on the Hawaiian Islands, featuring many spectacular cascades plunging from cliffs and canyons, among which Rainbow Falls stands out as particularly unique.

Rainbow Falls (Waianuenue) is located in Waimea Valley State Recreation Area in Hilo, on the western side of Hawaii Island.
Waianuenue means "rainbow in the water" in the Hawaiian language.When the waterfall’s waters rush down violently, they stir up a significant mist over the clear pool below, and when morning light refracts through it, a beautiful rainbow is formed – hence the name.
Rainbow Falls is about 80 feet high, and compared to other waterfalls on the island, it may not be particularly tall or majestic. However, the layers of lush tropical plants surrounding Rainbow Falls give it a distinctive charm. The best time to view the falls is in the early morning, when soft sunlight filters through the dense foliage and shines upon the cascading water as it drops into the crystal-clear pool. The rising mist floats ethereally in the air, as if veiled in a layer of white gauze, and under the sunlight’s refraction, forms a stunning rainbow. Especially after rainfall, the waterfall’s volume increases dramatically, and the thunderous roar of the rushing water echoes through the forest – a breathtaking scene that is truly unforgettable.
