The Qiantang River is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and is the largest river in China’s Zhejiang Province. The major tides occur around the 16th to the 18th days of the seventh lunar month each year. Due to the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth in a straight line, an immense gravitational pull is created, triggering the tidal phenomenon. Additionally, the Qiantang River estuary is trumpet-shaped—the distance between the northern and southern banks is about 100 kilometers, narrowing to about 20 kilometers at the mouth of the Qiantang River, and further reducing to just about 2.5 kilometers at Haining Yanguan. This dramatic change in width causes the incoming tide to surge back, creating the spectacle of the “Qiantang Tide.” With the combination of favorable timing and geography, such a wonder is formed. Alongside the Amazon River and the Ganges, it is recognized as one of the world’s three great tidal bores, with the Qiantang Tide even being called the “world’s largest tidal bore.”
