Shilin Xishan Ancient Canal Hike – A Hidden Nature Trail in Taipei for a Healthy Getaway

The Banling settlement, located at No. 71 Lane, Section 3, Zhishan Road, Xishan Li, Shilin District, once boasted extensive terraced rice fields fed by the clear and abundant waters of the Banling Canal. However, as the canal fell into disrepair over time, the scenic farmland gradually disappeared. Starting in 2012, after discussions between the Taipei City Bureau of Soil and Water Conservation and local farmers, restoration work on the century-old canal began, bringing flowing water back to the abandoned terraces.

Following in the footsteps of local elders after the project’s completion, begin your walk at the “Xishan Century-Old Canal” sign at the entrance of No. 21 Alley, Lane 71, Section 3, Zhishan Road. Passing through the red-brick houses of the settlement, you’ll come across a small washing square used by farmers. Aside from the laundry basins once used by local women, nearby farmers in the past would also come here to rinse off the mud after a day’s work, cleaning up before heading home.

Notably, an old whetstone used by farmers has been preserved here. Although there are now more advanced sharpening tools, local farmers still use this stone after busy farming seasons. The smooth surface of the stone reflects the hard work of generations of farmers. A local elder pointed to a tall pomelo tree nearby and told us that its fruit was once a favorite toy for rural children. Fitted into a homemade bamboo air pump, the fruit could provide hours of fun.
