A Big Campus Hunt in Taichung: Travel Along Idol Drama Locations

Not to be outshined by Taipei and Kaohsiung, Taichung—with its romantic urban vibe—has become a new favorite among film and idol drama directors. The city’s campuses, blessed with beautiful scenery and expansive grounds, have served as backdrops for numerous idol dramas, such as Asia University with its European flair, which was the filming location for the finale of “Miss No Good,” while the once wildly popular “It Started with a Kiss” was shot at Providence University in Shalu.

National Chung Hsing University is the oldest and most prestigious national university in Taichung. Originally established as an agricultural college during the Japanese colonial period, it was reorganized into Chung Hsing University in 1917. With its vast grounds and tree-lined pathways, plus the nearby National Central Library offering abundant academic resources, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Aside from the scenic beauty inside and outside the schools, the nearby Nansheng Road and Xuefu Road are lined with affordable eateries that are popular among students. Classic old-school snacks like Xiao Pang’s Gua Bao, Tsai Family Tofu Pudding, Lao Luo Beef Noodles, and Yaqiwan Oily Rice from the area near the back railway station, as well as great food options at Zhongxiao Night Market, the Third Market, and Lecheng Temple, make this area a top recommendation whether you’re exploring Taichung’s old town, sampling traditional snacks, or reliving the city’s history.

Tunghai University encompasses a university, high school, and elementary school, forming a comprehensive educational community. Due to its vast campus, it boasts many renowned spots, such as the “Luce Memorial Chapel,” a masterpiece by I.M. Pei and Chen Chi-kwan, which is a must-visit when in Tunghai. The Wenli Boulevard is another famous site. Most importantly, with a sprawling campus of 133 hectares and picturesque scenery, it’s a beloved sightseeing spot for students and visitors alike in Taichung.

Covering 24 hectares, Asia University features an open-campus design in an overall Greco-Roman style. It is a private university established by the China Medical University Group. In 2007, the university’s founder, Cai Changhai, not only donated multiple artworks to the school but also successfully invited renowned architect Tadao Ando to build an art museum on campus, which greatly boosted its reputation.
