The U.S.-based coffee chain Blue Bottle Coffee, which has garnered attention internationally, had established 14 locations across America since its founding in 2002. Its original store is located in Oakland, with fashionable outposts also in major U.S. cities such as San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Its minimalist style has earned it the nickname “the Apple of the coffee world,” showcasing its distinctive design and atmosphere that have captivated fans. 2015 was a milestone year for Blue Bottle Coffee—the brand made its first overseas expansion, choosing Japan, a country globally renowned for its tea culture. The first store opened on February 6 in Tokyo’s Kiyosumi-Shirakawa district, attracting large crowds daily who lined up for the chance to enter. The first store in Japan is located in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, an area less familiar to most tourists compared to popular sightseeing spots. Situated in Tokyo’s Koto Ward, it lies within a quiet, laid-back residential neighborhood with a touch of traditional town charm. Access is convenient via the Oedo and Hanzomon subway lines. The decision to open Blue Bottle Coffee’s first overseas store in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa—rather than in a bustling commercial district or a trendy, well-known area—demonstrates the brand's continued commitment to its site selection strategy and to fostering its unique identity.
