Three years ago, Japanese rising photographer Kotori Kawashima gained immense popularity in Taiwan and Japan with his work “Mirai-chan.” In March 2015, he was awarded the prestigious “Kimura Ihei Award,” often referred to as the Oscars of Japanese photography. The award-winning photo collection “Star,” themed around Taiwan, documents ordinary people, animals, and street scenes across the island. The project took three years to complete, with over 70,000 film frames shot. Through his lens, Kawashima captures every touching moment of life in Taiwan.

In “Star,” Kotori Kawashima photographed not only people from various parts of Taiwan but also animals and street scenes… In his eyes, everything shines like an idol. It is these captivating moments that make up the work “Star.” To faithfully present every moment captured in Taiwan, the photographs themselves exude a strong local Taiwanese atmosphere. The photo book’s layout and color scheme also draw inspiration from the colorful Taiwanese umbrellas Kawashima saw in Taitung, aiming to convey the uniquely Taiwanese essence of “Star” through concrete imagery.

At the same time, to preserve the original composition of each piece, the photo book is specially designed with a mix of landscape and portrait orientations, hoping to allow readers to see the photographer’s original intention at the moment of capture.
