Located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, the Taj Mahal means ‘Crown Palace’. It was erected during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (Shah Jahan) to commemorate Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved consort of Shah Jahan.

The Taj Mahal is considered a treasure of Mughal architectural art, combining Iranian art, Islamic art, Indian art, and more. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1631 and took over a decade to complete. Shah Jahan spared no expense in creating this colorful and magnificent structure as a tribute to his love, resulting in the completion of this grand project. The Mughal emperor deployed thousands of elephants to transport various precious stones and luxurious materials from around the world: white marble from Rajasthan, jade from Punjab, malachite from Tibet, lapis lazuli from Sri Lanka, red jasper from Persia, and twenty-eight other types of precious metals and gemstones.
