Japan’s Ejima Bridge, with a total length of 1.7 kilometers and a width of 11.4 meters, reaches a maximum height of 44.7 meters. Aside from being the largest concrete steel bridge in Japan and the third largest in the world, its roller coaster-like design allows large ships to pass smoothly underneath.

Ejima Bridge spans Japan’s fifth-largest lake, “Lake Nakaumi,” connecting Sakaiminato City in Tottori Prefecture and Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture. The slopes of both approach roads reach 6.1% and 5.1% respectively. In other words, for every 100 meters driven from Shimane Prefecture, the road surface rises 6.1 meters, while from Tottori Prefecture it rises 5.1 meters. Aside from being nerve-wracking for onlookers, it’s also a major challenge for drivers. Additionally, aside from the breathtaking steepness of the bridge, passengers driving from the Sakaiminato City side can also enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Nakaumi from the bridge’s summit, especially during dusk when the setting sun casts a particularly stunning glow. This unique scene has become a famous local attraction, drawing many tourists to visit.
