London’s Serpentine Gallery Unveils a Colorful Cocoon-Inspired Summer Pavilion

Since 2000, every summer the Royal Parks of London’s Hyde Park has invited architecture and design teams from around the world to create a temporary summer pavilion in front of the contemporary art gallery “Serpentine Gallery,” using the lush green lawns and trees as a backdrop. The three-month-long summer pavilion features a uniquely designed structure that serves as a beautiful piece of land art. During the day, visitors can enjoy afternoon tea there, and by night, the space transforms into a venue for performances or dances—making it truly special.

Each year’s Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion attracts significant attention, as the participating architecture and design teams must create an astonishing work under limited conditions. The Serpentine Gallery requires the invited teams to...300build an open temporary structure within a designated area of square meters, which must be fully demountable and transportable elsewhere after the exhibition period. Additionally, the construction costs of the Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion are not covered by the gallery itself but must be raised and managed by the architectural team. Moreover, the invited teams must not have previously completed any architectural projects in the UK. In other words, the summer pavilion will represent the team’s first built work in Britain, which is why the final outcome receives exceptional interest from the architecture community.
