Shirakawa-go Gassho Village in Japan is world-famous for its iconic gassho-zukuri architecture. This once-isolated mountain village gained international fame after being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, becoming a popular travel destination for both domestic and international tourists. Especially when winter arrives, the snow-covered wooden houses along with the enchanting night illuminations create a dreamlike fairytale scene that is truly unforgettable.

To allow more visitors to plan their trips in advance, the official Shirakawa-go website has released the 2016 (Heisei 28) Gassho Village illumination dates: January 16, January 23–24, January 30–31, February 7, and February 14 — a total of seven days. The nighttime lighting will take place near the Wada House, Myōzen-ji Temple, the west side, Kannamachi, and Shimo-Goso. During these times, the snow-blanketed village will be lit up with warm amber lights, evoking a serene and timeless atmosphere. Travelers hoping to experience this magical sight can start planning now. The 2015 night illuminations were held from July 16–20, with additional night lightings scheduled for September 18–22 and November 19–23.
