Tainan’s Fishlight Island is situated near Anping Fort. This secluded and tranquil sediment-formed sandbar is reachable only by crossing the Fishlight Bridge, a structure that links two worlds and gives the island an especially mysterious feel. It’s hard to imagine that this small sandy islet hides a design-forward concrete house called “Mao House.” With its clean, minimalist design, the unassuming exterior exudes an irresistible charm.

Mao House, a homestay designed by Tadao Ando’s student Mao Senjiang, features a concrete-style building with an ash-gray exterior that gives off a natural, uncontrived vibe. Decorative elements such as wooden doors, wood-paneled structures, and green plants create a serene and harmonious atmosphere. In this compact space, artistry abounds both inside and out, perfectly capturing a pure and tranquil ambiance. Though the homestay appears understated—like a hermit sage withdrawn from the world—it still can’t hide the glow of its thoughtful design, which never fails to impress at first sight.
