In Greek mythology, there was a gorgon named Medusa, and legend has it that anyone who looked directly into her eyes would be turned to stone. Although Medusa is just a myth and its truth remains unverifiable, in North Yorkshire, England, there is an eerie petrifying cave. It is said that any object that comes into contact with the spring water inside will turn to stone within just a few months. Locals believe the well may have been cursed by the devil, giving it such magical powers, hence its name—Medusa Cave (Petrifying Well)—and making it an unusual tourist attraction.

Any object that touches the water of the Medusa Cave—be it leaves, dolls, sticks, or more—will slowly turn to stone. This magical phenomenon has drawn scientists to investigate. It turns out the spring water here has an extremely high concentration of minerals. When objects are continuously exposed to the dripping water, a hard shell forms on their surface. The process is similar to the formation of stalactites and stalagmites, but happens much faster. The time it takes for petrification varies depending on the nature of the object. For example, a small teddy bear can petrify in just 3–5 months, while porous large objects take 6–12 months, and non-porous large ones require over 18 months.
