Martin Dyrvang, a 26-year-old student from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, took part in National Taiwan University’s “Taiwan Natural Treasures Map” fieldwork program. He explored Xitou and captured aerial footage of the mountain forests using a drone, later editing it into a video. This foreign perspective on “seeing Taiwan” is equally breathtaking.

This year, the Ministry of Education piloted the “Outstanding Foreign Youth Fieldwork in Taiwan Program,” where universities offer “integrated learning programs” to recruit international students to experience Taiwan’s education, academia, and industries, encouraging them to study or conduct research in Taiwan. A total of 15 international students joined NTU’s “Taiwan Natural Treasures Map” fieldwork program, interning for a month at five forest centers including Xitou, Heshè, and Taiping Mountain. Participants shared their experiences in Taiwan through text and photos.

At 26, Martin loves to travel and enjoys capturing landscapes from high above using drones. For this fieldwork program, he aimed to present Taiwan from a unique angle. Assigned to Xitou, Martin frequently used his drone to film panoramic views of the mountain forests. The unpredictable weather in Xitou, often rainy, added difficulty to the drone shoots. He compiled his footage into a 3-minute, 10-second video, which he uploaded to his blog “Taiwan from above” to promote Taiwan to the world.

On his blog, Martin mentioned that Xitou’s mountain scenery resembles the Forest Moon of Endor from “Star Wars” and the settings of “Jurassic Park.” In addition to filming Xitou from the air, Martin also captured footage of NTU’s library, the Shuiyuan dormitory, Zuiyue Lake, and Fuhe Bridge.
