Taiwan's Classic Cycling Routes: 5 Scenic Bike Trails in Hualien

Cycling has become one of the most popular national sports in recent years. Starting in August, the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education launched a voting campaign for the “Top 10 Classic Cycling Routes Across Taiwan,” themed around happiness. A total of 32 cycling routes from around the island entered the second round of selection, with Hualien County having five routes, including Guangfu, Meiti Creek, Yufu, Happiness Connection – Hualien Bicycle Road Network, and Two Lakes, ranking first among all counties and cities in Taiwan.

The top 5 Hualien cycling routes shortlisted are as follows:
● Two Lakes Bicycle Path
The Two Lakes Bicycle Path stretches 35.5 kilometers from Qixingtan Scenic Area – Deyan Fish Farm in the north to Lianhuatan Scenic Area – Visitor Service Center in the south. The route includes various experiences such as the coastal section from Qixingtan to Huaren Seawall, the Ji’an countryside section, and the mountain-hugging section that crosses Lianhua Mountain. Each segment offers unique riding features.
● Meiti Creek Bicycle Path

Along the way, you can enjoy the natural winding curves of Meiti Creek, the scenery of the creek, flora and fauna, as well as observe a rich and precious variety of bird life. In addition, the route connects Hualien Railway Station to Guofu Bridge, and to the north it links up with the newly completed Forest Sightseeing Bike Path. It passes through traditional indigenous villages all the way to Xincheng Railway Station, allowing riders to fully experience village landscapes and local characteristics.

● Happiness Connection – Hualien Bicycle Road Network

Starting from the northern side of Shoufeng Township, where Provincial Highway 9 and Provincial Highway 9丙 intersect, this route connects to the famous Lianhuatan Scenic Area in Hualien. To the east, there are leisure and entertainment spots such as Shoufeng Zhongshan Park, the Bald Cypress Countryside Road, Rufeng Zhuoyu, He Tianye Japanese-Style Old Houses, Shuhu Cherry Blossom Path, and Bee Homeland Ecological Museum. To the west, starting from Shoufeng streets, it links up with Fengchun Ice Shop, Lichuan Fish Farm, Wuwei House, Toyota Historical Museum, Shoufeng Township Historical Museum, Bilian Temple, the Longan Old Tree in Taitung, Zhaofeng Ranch, and Yunshan Water, offering intellectual and recreational attractions. With convenient transportation and abundant crops along the way, it showcases the unique rural scenery of the Huatung Valley.

● Yufu Bicycle Path

Starting from Yuli Railway Station, this dedicated 10-kilometer bicycle path follows the old railway line across the Xiuguluan River and extends southward to the former Dongli Railway Station. Built on the modified route of the old railway, it takes riders through some of Hualien’s most renowned farmland landscapes, offering the enjoyment of unpolluted, fresh air, accompanied by the sounds of insects and birds in the morning and evening.
