● Lunchboxes
In the past, many train passengers traveling between eastern and western Taiwan would buy a packed rice ball sold at the Chishang train station platform to stave off hunger. Then, starting in 1962, local vendors replaced bamboo leaf-wrapped rice balls with wooden box-style lunchboxes — the now-famous Chishang rice lunchbox was born. After the rice lunchbox gained fame, it helped put both Chishang rice and the Chishang area on the national map. Getting a lunchbox has since become a must-do when visiting Chishang.
