As autumn arrives and the temperature begins to drop, the maple leaves across Taiwan also start to turn red. Alishan, a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, begins to see various maples gradually turning red from mid-to-late October. Three types of color-changing plants—green maple, Taiwanese triangular maple, and Taiwanese crimson maple—start changing colors in sequence. By late December, visitors to Alishan can still enjoy the red foliage, with beautiful scenery of green, yellow, and red along the way.

According to the “Alishan in the Clouds” fan page, the maple leaves on Alishan mainly consist of three types: green maple, Taiwanese triangular maple, and Taiwanese crimson maple. Based on their color-changing timeline, green maples change from mid-to-late October to mid-November, Taiwanese triangular maples from late November to early December, and Taiwanese crimson maples from early December to late December. The main viewing spot for green maples within the Alishan Forest Recreation Area is at the Alishan Hotel, where over 50% have already turned red. Outside the recreation area, green maples are found along Highway 18 from Alishan to Zizhong, with roadside trees from the 90K to 96K marks currently more than 50% red. Take advantage of the weekend and head to the Alishan Hotel (entry fee required) or the section of Highway 18 between 90K and 95K to enjoy the maple foliage when the weather is nice.
