Since winter began, Taipei City has been treated to wave after wave of vibrant floral blooms. The Bailin Left Bank Riverside Flower Sea, with over 50,000 seasonal blooms woven into a stunning floral carpet, is now in full bloom. The viewing period lasts until the end of January 2016, and weekends are a great time to visit—enjoy the flowers, explore the wetlands, and observe migratory birds in winter for a relaxing weekend getaway.

The flower sea is located at Bailin Left Bank Riverside Park, right next to the Shizi Baseball Stadium. It’s a brand-new flower viewing attraction planned this year, and its first-ever floral display has amazed many passersby. Featuring cold-resistant winter flowers such as purple salvia and yellow cosmos, the sea of blossoms also highlights four shades of crabapple flowers—red, peach, pink, and white. The design incorporates wavy line patterns along with large and small polka dots for added flair. The colorful array of blooms showcases the beauty of a florid landscape, making it hard for visitors to leave.

After enjoying the flower sea, you can also visit Shizi Island, whose wetlands are well worth exploring. At Toutou Wetland, fiddler crabs crawl across the tidal flats after the water recedes. Sheliu Wetland often features mudskippers, with their bulging, adorable eyes. Meanwhile, the old and new seawall wetlands are perfect for birdwatching—you might spot grey herons, sandpipers, and little ringed plovers. Aside from the wetland scenery, Niaotou Park offers breathtaking, expansive views, plus 3D landscape art murals that create realistic, three-dimensional scenes attracting many visitors for photos. For a weekend escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, plan a short one-day trip to Shizi Island to immerse yourself in nature.
