In 2012, the mayor of Takeo City launched a library revitalization plan, partnering with Japan’s “Culture Convenience Club” (CCC), the parent company of the globally renowned T-Site bookstore. In April 2013, the library reopened after a major renovation. The project overhauled the entire venue, introducing a collection of 200,000 books for open access and borrowing. It also included spaces for Starbucks and T-Site bookstore, allowing visitors to enjoy coffee and light meals while reading. If you find a book you love, you can even purchase it directly at the in-house bookstore. This approach completely changed the traditional image of libraries, turning reading into a dynamic, continuous experience and showcasing the joys of a reading lifestyle. Every weekend, families, couples, and groups of friends flock here to enjoy a relaxing time.

This experimental transformation may have raised questions about its success, but the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Within six months of reopening, the library welcomed over 500,000 visitors, averaging at least 2,800 people per day—more than double the previous numbers. Book borrowings reached 300,000 volumes, marking an impressive achievement. Beyond promoting reading culture, the talked-about library also attracted tourists, with nearly 40% of visitors coming from outside the area specifically to see this unique library.
