To celebrate Taipei as the 2016 World Design Capital, a series of large-scale events that blend international appeal with local character are being held. The first to kick off is the 【2016 Taipei Dawn Music Festival】, which unfolded at dawn on January 1 in Dajia Riverside Park. The event not only called on citizens to welcome the first light of dawn over Taipei’s city skyline in 2016 but also symbolized the official opening of Taipei as the 2016 World Design Capital.

Riverside parks are like green belts that embrace the city, offering citizens diverse and vibrant living spaces, and have truly become cross-disciplinary stages. The “2016 Taipei Dawn Music Festival” was the highlight of this event. On January 1, against the backdrop of dawn, a creative flag-raising ceremony kicked off the first day of the year. This was followed by a cross-genre musical performance featuring the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and soul diva Jia Jia, as well as the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and rock musician Luan Tan A-Xiang. Popular music intertwined with classical symphony and traditional Chinese orchestra, bringing a refreshing new style that immersed the audience in a musical feast.

This event utilized unique container installation art to provide a co-creation space for designers and the public. Designers such as Huang Tzu-chiao, Akibo, and Mayday used containers as mediums to showcase Taipei’s boundless enthusiasm. They added color to the event space and created talking points, allowing citizens to personally engage in design and experience a brand-new design lifestyle.

For Taipei’s New Year’s Eve, if you don’t want to be caught in the crowds, there are more creative and artistic ways to celebrate. Reimagining Taipei’s New Year, eight major cultural and art institutions in Taipei have extended their opening hours. For example, Taipei Artist Village and Ximending Red House are open all night for the first time; the Taipei Fine Arts Museum has no admission fee after 5 PM and remains open until 8:30 PM; Zhongshan Hall and Spot Taipei will screen classic films all night until 5 AM the next morning; the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei invites the public to pick up brushes and paint together in a night “sketch” session, creating exciting New Year artworks; Treasure Hill is offering a special night tour; Songshan Cultural and Creative Park features classic film music lectures and midnight soft music performances. The wide range of exciting activities aims to offer Taipei citizens and tourists a unique New Year holiday experience.
