Cable News Network (CNN) recently announced the most anticipated new urban landmarks of 2016. Of the nine selected buildings, two are from Taiwan: the new Shilin landmark “Taipei Performing Arts Center” and the luxury residential building “Tao Zhu Yin Yuan” in Xinyi District.

The “Taipei Performing Arts Center,” located in Shilin, was designed by architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). It features a square main structure supporting a massive floating sphere, presenting an avant-garde design that is highly eye-catching. It is expected to be completed by mid-2016. Meanwhile, the luxury residential building “Tao Zhu Yin Yuan” in Taipei’s Xinyi District was designed by renowned French architect Vincent Callebaut. The spiral-shaped structure incorporates expansive green balconies and gardens, resembling a vertical forest within the city. It also includes systems for organic waste and water recycling as well as solar power generation, aiming to become one of the world’s most environmentally friendly buildings.
