With the spirit and attitude of "Sensei," it layers up into a melt-in-your-mouth, soft, smooth, and fluffy texture.
Daily limited-edition flavors of mille-feuille cakes — enjoy the simple beauty of Japanese minimalism.
This dessert shop on Minquan Road, which specializes in mille-feuille, has surprisingly short business hours. Even so, the place is packed in the afternoon, with foodies doing whatever it takes to get in during the five-hour window to try the famous limited handmade mille-feuille. The owner explains that the reason for such limited hours is due to purely handmade production with very limited output — they close once it's sold out. As for the shop name “Mr. Sensei,” the reason is even simpler: it’s located next to a traditional Chinese medicine clinic, so the name, which means “teacher” or “doctor” in Japanese (sensei), was chosen. It also reflects the artisan spirit of mastering one’s craft.

“Sensei” is another labor of love from the owner of Ice House.Likewise inspired by Kyoto’s Marukyu Koyamaen, this handmade mille-feuille cake doesn’t have a fixed menu, offering different flavors daily, along with a wider selection of drinks than Ice House. On a leisurely afternoon, why not visit Sensei, order a slice of mille-feuille with a drink, and enjoy the pure happiness brought by the flavors in a Japanese-inspired setting.

Mr. shares the same philosophy as Ice House: carefully selected ingredients, handmade, low-sugar and healthy, all while letting you taste the original flavors of the ingredients. If you’re used to the distinct flaky layers of traditional mille-feuille, you’ll be amazed here — how can mille-feuille be so smooth and soft? Delicately fluffy, it melts in your mouth, with the original flavors of the ingredients spreading richly in your mouth. This small cake holds a world of meaning.
[Matcha Strawberry]
The presence of strawberries tells you it’s a winter limited edition. Green matcha powder paired with bright red strawberries makes for a very pleasing color scheme. The middle layer is LESCURE fresh cream, which balances the bitterness of the matcha and highlights the sour-sweet freshness of the strawberries. It’s an unexpectedly well-matched combination — who says matcha can only go with red beans?

[Plain Matcha]
This is where you can best taste the flavor of Maruyamaen. Layer upon layer of matcha builds up to a rich and elegant taste, with even the characteristic bitterness of matcha fully preserved. Ideal for matcha lovers who don’t prefer overly sweet flavors, though those sensitive to bitterness may want to consider carefully.

[Tieguanyin]
Made with Tieguanyin tea powder, this mille-feuille may look plain but offers a surprisingly impressive taste. The tea aroma is rich and lingering, standing out uniquely among the many fruit-flavored options. Tea enthusiasts definitely shouldn’t miss this one — it’s a marvelous experience to enjoy the sensation of drinking tea while eating cake.

[Flower Fruit Mountain]
This one has a higher price point, but that’s no surprise given the abundance of fresh fruit filling. The soft, fluffy plain crust pairs with the tangy freshness of the fruits, creating a refreshing and not overly sweet taste with a distinctly girlish charm.

[Rich Chocolate]
A must-try for chocolate lovers. This bittersweet chocolate mille-feuille is made from 70% dark chocolate, offering a rich, smooth texture without being overly sweet — it’s very endearing and reportedly a bestseller in the shop.

[Colorful Berries]
At first glance, it looks like just strawberries, but after tasting, you’ll realize the filling is far more than that. Cranberries, raspberries… and various other berries create a rich, multi-layered tart-sweet flavor, balanced with delicate, smooth fresh cream. The pink hue is simply mouthwatering.

[Lemon Yogurt]
Perhaps because of the yogurt, this mille-feuille isn’t as sour as expected. The lemon aroma is slightly muted, but it still maintains a light and gentle taste.

[Drinks]
%strong>Maruyamaen Matcha Slush & Berry Milkshake
This berry milkshake is sure to win over many hearts. The sweet-tart blend of strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, and blackcurrants is perfectly balanced. The various berries offer layers of fragrant, subtle sweetness — a natural fruit aroma that’s definitely not artificially flavored. It’s truly uplifting to drink.
The Maruyamaen Matcha Slush, topped with fresh strawberries this season, keeps the matcha green from looking dull. The strawberries sit on top without sinking, showing just how thick and smooth the slush is. The rich matcha aroma, harmonized with fresh milk, becomes even more approachable.

%strong>Maruyamaen Hot Matcha Latte
This bowl of Maruyamaen hot matcha latte is, needless to say, the shop’s signature drink. You’ll find it on nearly every table. A dollop of matcha powder is sprinkled on the velvety foam. Bring the bowl to your lips, and the aroma hits you even before the first sip. The rich, mellow aftertaste is slightly bitter yet sweet, not astringent. The hand-whisked matcha seems to carry flickers of Kyoto — how could you not get hooked?

%You can also customize your drink to suit your preferences at the counter.

%The interior is exquisitely designed, reflecting the care put into every detail.

%It shares another entrance with the traditional Chinese medicine clinic, and the decor is nothing short of thoughtful.

%During the day, plenty of natural light streams in through the large windows, complemented by the soft lighting inside the shop and the Japanese-style decorations on the walls, creating a uniquely tranquil vibe. Just being here allows you to enjoy a moment of relaxation.
