In 1996, David Lipsky (played by Jesse Eisenberg), a newly appointed reporter for Rolling Stone, embarked on a five-day road trip with the then-rising literary star David Foster Wallace (played by Jason Segel) for a story assignment. Over the course of their journey, the two Davids gradually formed a subtle friendship—sometimes confiding like close pals, other times silently competing. They witnessed each other’s most vulnerable sides but were too stubborn to admit their bond. After the trip, the article was never published, and the two never met again. The recorded conversations became their private secret, quietly resting in a corner.

In 2008, Wallace died by suicide, reigniting Lipsky’s long-buried memories. It turned out that this five-day road trip—and their discussions on loneliness, fame, and life aspirations—had left a profound impact on both their journeys.
