The first cold wave of this winter arrived on the 23rd. The Central Weather Bureau predicts temperatures will start dropping from the 22nd and remain chilly until the 25th. Due to low temperatures and sufficient moisture, the snowfall altitude could drop to 1,500 – 1,000 meters, making it possible to see snowfall without heading to high mountains.In addition, another cold wave is moving southward from the high-pressure system over the Mongolian Plateau and may arrive around New Year’s Eve, which requires special attention.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the first cold wave of this year arrived on the 23rd, with the coldest period expected from the evening of the 24th to the early morning of the 25th. Minimum temperatures across various regions could potentially drop below 10°C. Current forecasts indicate Taipei City at 6°C, northern Taiwan at 5°C, central Taiwan at 7°C, southern Taiwan at 8°C, Yilan at 6°C, and Hualien at 8°C. Zheng Mingdian, director of the CWB’s Forecast Center, also stated on his personal page that the lower limit for snowfall altitude is now expected to easily drop below 1,500 meters, and may even go below 1,000 meters, meaning snow viewing might be possible in foothills without the need to climb high mountains.

In the Taipei area, due to sufficiently low temperatures and ample moisture in Yangmingshan, snowfall cannot be ruled out. The Yangmingshan Management Office stated that if it does snow, it will be the first time in seven years since January 24, 2009. Snow is expected to be visible on the peaks of Datun Mountain, Qixing Mountain, and Zhuzi Mountain. Additionally, high mountains above 1,500 meters, including Yushan, Hehuanshan, Lala Mountain, Liyuan, Alishan, and Taipingshan, all have the potential for snowfall.
